Brazos Bend State Park is a great place to visit, but you don’t want to live there. It’s a protected wetlands, complete with swamps, marshes and all the animals that live in them. If you go away without seeing an alligator, then you didn’t get out of the car.

I hadn’t visited there in several decades until recently. The morning I went was calm and quiet. The sun never appeared, so the lighting was flatter than I would have preferred, but it was still a treat to walk and listen. My friends tell me that the drought hit it hard last year, but the vegetation has returned and the water level is back up.

Bring your bug spray and go for a hike. Just don’t bother the gators if they’re sleeping on the trails.
