Shooting downtown at night is quickly becoming one of my favorite things to shoot. I’m not sure if it’s because of the lights, the sounds, the huge subjects or the thought of being in downtown with almost no one there. It’s like I have the place to myself. But it’s that very thing that makes me cautious about shooting downtown by myself too.

It’s easy to get lost in the subject as you’re trying to find the right spot, set up the tripod and compose your shot through the viewfinder. You have to remain aware of your surroundings at the same time. I’ve never really been concerned for my safety while shooting, but I don’t go out of my way to tempt things either. Having a choice, I’d rather have a friend along for the company and maybe talk a little shop.

After leaving a meeting downtown one evening, I walked around a few blocks and captured this scene at 1000 Louisiana.
