One of the fun things I enjoy about night photography are the light trails created by passing vehicles. Sometimes I do my best to avoid them, while other times they can enhance the photo. They occur when the camera shutter stays open for several seconds as cars drive by. Their headlamps and taillights create streaks during the time exposures. Though you never know quite what they will look like until you are finished, they add a sense of movement and color to the night images.
