Sports photographers are in a class all by themselves. It takes a lot of practice, patience and understanding of the sport to end the day with shots they are pleased with. Everything is working against them too. Fast moving subjects, strong telephoto lenses with shallow depth of field and in many cases, low light situations, all combine to make their job a very difficult profession.
I have shot sports only a few times, so when I saw some surfers at the beach, I tried my hand at grabbing some shots. My biggest challenge was knowing which surfer was ready to grab a wave, as there were about a dozen guys in the water. By the time you point your lens and get them framed, most had fallen. This one guy hung in long enough for me to capture this quick shot.
